April 2007
Dear Irish Terrier Friends,
After the excitement of Crufts, April has been a quieter month for Irish Terriers. We've had some excellent press with a striking new set of pictures taken for an article in Dogs Today. This features some of Marion Lovelace's (Brazan) puppies and a current show pair, Slade and Slippery Jack (Slippy). They were at Discover Dogs and I was in charge of them both. The Brazens are very stylish, beautifully presented and full of character and intelligence - "brains to burn" someone said of them. The other two dogs featured were Jane England's Bracken and Mungo.Jane is herself an excellent photographer and has provided some lovely pictures for the Irish Terrier calendars. She strongly represents the all important pet owners point of view (that's most of us!) and promotes the sheer delight of living with Irish Terriers.
It is such a good idea to show your dogs on every possible occasion. While we're trying to slowly increase their numbers every bit of publicity helps to raise the breed profile and can lead to enquiries for puppies.
Local shows, if your dog enjoys them, are great fun too.Sophie Carpenter's Pepper won the first prize at the Denby Country Fair after a sparkling performance on the agility course - quite unrehearsed.
Our Princess Bega (Beegie) won the terrier races at the South Dorset Hunt Point to Point. Too big to get through the gap in the hay bales she simply lept over the top pouncing on the rabbit skin drag and tossing it up in the air to great applause.
Zuleika (Zuli) can't bear crowds and thinks she's far too good a hunter to waste time on silly games. She stayed in the car.
It is extraordinary how every Irish Terrier I have known has been such a distinct character each with a very individual take on life. They are not clones, thank God, but unforgettable characters each in his / her own right.
One great sadness has been the recent loss of May Williamson's much loved Tuppence. She was only seven which is even more tragic. This should be a real warning to all dog owners to beware of haemorrhagic enteritis. If a dog seems unwell and produces a very dark stool you need to get to your vet at once. There is very little time and any delay can prove fatal. We do send May our sympathy.
Tuppence's daughter Lady is a beautiful top winning Champion bitch and her daughter is my little showgirl Maddie. I mentioned her in the last letter and several of you wrote asking for more news. Well, she has done her first show (WELKS) and had a ball it seems. I was sadly not there but she won the bitch puppy class after a great deal of romping about with her little friends in the ring. She did a complete 'body roll' at one point which prompted a roar of laughter and the remark 'she must have been watching Underdog on telly'.
To my delight Eileen Batley, a distinguished breeder and not given to lavish praise, telephoned to say 'she looks beautiful your little girl'. So thank you Eilieen.
Thank you for your letters and pic's. Please may we have your email addresses. I know we all love post but emails are easier.
Do keep in touch. Many greetings and love to the dogs,

Lucy
