August 2007
Dear Irish Terrier Friends,
The summer has collapsed with rain and more rain with the awful consequences of flooding, hardship and dismay. I have not heard of an Irish distressed by the mayhem except that they have a very pronounced dislike of the ‘wet’ even at the best of times. The mere suggestion of a walk in the torrential rain had mine scurrying away upstairs.
At the end of June the Irish Terrier Association Show was rained off outside and had to be held in the hall at Penkridge. It was an excellent show with a very good entry but it’s not nearly as much fun indoors. The dogs always look so good on the green grass in the sunshine. Hans Grutner, a highly successful and distinguished breeder from Germany was judging. He and his wife Karina breed the famous ‘von der Emsmuhles’. They are lovely dogs and known for their wonderful temperament – quite apart from the fact that they have won every title in the book both here and in Europe.
It was a happy show in spite of the rain. Hans adores the breed and his enthusiasm and pleasure seems to shine through with every dog he handles. (see link on the website www.irish-terrier.de).
Thank you so much for the new crop of email addresses but please don’t worry if, like me, you are not an Internet buff.
I love your letters and wonder if we could put extracts from them on a special part of the website so that we can all enjoy them? With your permission may we do that? But do say if there is a particular letter which you would rather not share.
Now….The Firehouse Dog. Thank you for the ‘crits’ from the various papers. I did ask Diana Nicholls before I’d seen it if it was ‘any good’. Her answer was apt “for heavens sake Lucy – it’s an Irish Terrier – what more do you want?’
Yes, it is fun once you’ve swallowed hard and coped with the hairpiece curl and the American psycho babble. The agility round was breathtaking and the tail wagger who takes no notice whatsoever of blazing buildings and collapsing walls really made me laugh. You must see it. You will come out smiling.
The calendar for 2008 is underway – do let us have any pic’s you may feel are suitable. There is the back cover for pic’s that don’t quite qualify as a main page.
There are some more verses in the poetry section beautifully read by Gayle Hunnicutt, Jeanette Sterk and Richard Clifford. Do have a look. Richard reads Billy and Monty on the children’s page as well. We have some competitions coming up for the children.
I hope you have some good summer holidays. I’m off up the east coast to Lindesfarne (Holy Island) with Zuli and Beegie next week plus a cage with my adored canaries. I doubt there will be much Holy contemplation (but I love the sea and Zu and Beeg are perfect companions).
Many greetings, my love to the dogs,
Lucy
