June 2007
Dear Irish Terrier Friends,
I need to begin this letter with apologies for two ‘mistakes’ in the last one. I had dictated it to Jane rather late at night and at high speed (as usual). Now…
Sohpie Carpenter’s little bitch who won the agility prize in Denbigh is called Pippa, not Pepper – sorry Sophie. The Carpenter’s have two lovely bitches who seem to run the house. Pippa’s house sister Lucy is a charming bitch who mothers all the family rabbits – well, anything is possible with an Irish Terrier!
More alarming was my seeming claim to have been ‘in charge’ of Marion Lovelace’s two Irish at Discover Dogs. Help – what a presumption. I’ve been in dead trouble. I had in fact said that I had been enchanted by the pair, but words can get scrambled on the telephone. Jane and I are contrite and understand very well that these things matter.
I spent a week in the New Forest (my granddaughter Kate’s half term) walking four Irish Terriers – my Beegie and Zuli and Kate’s Isobel (Mussie) and Nonny. I’m the family ‘whipper-in’ and they do behave reasonably well for me apart from chasing rabbits, hares, deer and anything else real or imaginary! The four of them are great friends and it is amusing to watch them ‘working’ the hedgerows as a team. Fortunately birds can fly and rabbits have handy burrows. Nonny is only three and still a bit wild. She gets very excited but seems to know that Zuli does the flushing out and she is one of the ‘catchers’. It is wonderful to watch them playing and running – they look like natural animals of the forest. Extraordinary they look so perfect on a satin covered sofa as well!
Derek Jacobi has recorded ‘Jock of the Great War’ for us. It was a huge privilege to watch such a master of his art at work. ‘Jock’ is the story of a dog who served in the trenches in the First World War – not exactly a true story but based very much on historical fact. It is dedicated to my late brother Ronald and his first Irish Terrier our beloved Jocky-boy. There were a few tears all round as it is a very moving story.
The CD will be available on the website from Remembrance Sunday (November 11th).
I drove up to Malvern for ‘The 3 Counties Championship Dog Show’. Paul Livesey was judging and the dogs were very happy in his hands. Little show girl Maddie came second in her puppy class. It was the first time I had seen her in the ring and she is very pretty indeed and surprisingly well behaved. We had perfect weather, if a little warm, and Zuli and Beegie and I spent hours walking on the Malvern Hills and across to the British Camp (an Iron Age Hill Fort). The views in all directions are stunning.
Thank you always for your letters and pic’s. Do send your email addresses if you have one.
Many greetings and kindest regards. Love to the dogs,
Lucy
