March 2007
Dear Irish Terrier friends,
Thank you again for your letters, pictures and emails. I am delighted that the website seems to provide so much amusement. March is always a key month in the dog year mainly because of Crufts. It is an enormous show, bigger than ever, and very well organised by the Kennel Club. With a very slick television presentation and coverage it seems to have captured an enormous audience well beyond the dog owning public.
I was amazed that after the briefest flit across the television screen my home answer phone was packed out with messages (and much laughter) from friends who are not doggy people at all. There were some lovely dogs in the ring, expertly handled and representing the Breed. I never think “that showing” is really what our beloved Irish are about, but it does provide a shop window to keep the Breed in the public eye. I’m always overwhelmed by the skill, devotion and sheer effort of organisation the Breeders put into presenting their dogs. We owe them everything.
We won a “Highly Commended” award for our Breed booth at Discover Dogs with our picture in the dog papers to prove it.
Congratulations to the excellent teams of dogs, breeders and owners. The dogs were the real stars (of course) oozing charm and making new friends and delighting old. It is an exhausting few days but we did all have enormous fun.
The Irish Terrier Association held it’s AGM in Shottery (nr Stratford upon Avon) last weekend. It was an excellent meeting with a grooming seminar in the morning where pet owners could bring along their dogs and be taught how to strip and groom them.
The Breed clubs do a tremendous job liaising with the Kennel Club, organising shows and producing a splendid Year Book. The Year Book comes with your membership and it is a very good read and full of information. To become a member of the ITA contact Ann Bradley, Swans Reach, Glassmoor Bank Road, Whittesey, Peterborough PE7 2LT, telephone 01733 205386.
I will mention the other clubs in future letters.
Lastly I have a new little show puppy Maddie. Well, she’s not really mine but I “sponsor” her. She lives with the Montelles and is a little bomber at the moment rushing about with her brother. Doubtless she will emerge miraculously as a well behaved show girl, but I never know how they manage it. I’ll keep you posted.
So many apologies to those of you who missed the 2007 calendar. We underestimated the demand but we’re on track for a much bigger quota next year.
Many greetings. Do keep in touch. My love to the dogs,
Lucy Jackson
