Dear Irish Terrier Friends,
Compared with March which always brings the excitement of Crufts April seems a quiet month in the dog world. I missed WELKS (West of England Ladies Kennel Society) show this year which was a pity. It is held in Malvern just at the foot of the beautiful Malvern Hills and must be the most lovely showground in the world.
Edna Howard Jones a famous name in Irish Terriers (the Breezy line) was their President for many years. She was a dear, dear friend and I have such happy memories of staying with her and visiting the show.
My little showgirl Maddie has not been in the ring since Crufts as she has produced the notorious ‘winter nose’. This means a slightly bald black patch just above her nose. It is not at all serious and will grow back soon enough but she would be classed ‘out of coat’ by the judge which won’t do at all.
The weather has changed so quickly that my Zuli and Beeg have been caught by the heat this week in their rather woolly state. Beegie has been a nightmare to walk as she’s too hot, and grazes her way round the park like a large sheep taking no notice of me. They had a dip in the lake this morning. We did get a little sprint out of her until she dried off. They are due to be stripped next week when I expect we’ll be back to rain or sub zero temperatures again. What a crazy spring we’ve had.
Thank you so much for your cards and telephone calls expressing such kind pleasure at my ‘elevation’ to President of the ITA. As I said in the last letter, it is neither too taxing nor time consuming, but there will be no lack of love, that is for sure.
I’ve written a small book for the children about what to expect when you collect a new puppy. ‘We’ll call her Daisy’ has a picture and little rhyme on each page and I hope will prove amusing and informative. It will be up on the website (children’s club and book section) shortly.
We receive so many charming letters from the website that we have decided to set up a friends letter page. It is such a joy to have news of Irish Terriers from all over the world. One card closer to home in London was from Emily Fitzroy asking whether I minded if they read ‘Love Song’ at her Wedding. It is the poem read by Joanna Lumley on the website and tells of the stages in our dogs lives and how our relationship with them changes as they grow older. I’d never met Emily nor Brocquy their Irish Terrier but was of course very touched and delighted.
Here is an extract from her letter.
“We are the very proud and adoring owners of Brocquy a two year old Irish Terrier. We hoped that you would not mind if my oldest friend read out your marvellous poem ‘Love Song’ during my Wedding service next week. I’m sure that apart from actually getting married it will be the highlight of the service”. Well, bless them all.
We’ve sent them some books and a years membership of the ITA for a wedding present and I’m looking forward to meeting Brocquy.
Do keep in touch. Many greetings and love to the dogs
