September 2008
Dear Irish Terrier Friends,
It might sound ungrateful considering the interesting and varied summer but I am so pleased to be home with my dogs and three canaries and my own bed…..at last. My appetite for ‘trundling’ around is not what it used to be. Zu and Beegie have had a lovely time but then they always do.
Granddaughter, Kate and I did a trip to see Lincoln Cathedral. I’m fairly sure it was more about the Harry Potter films which were her first interest but it is the most lovely place to visit. Would you believe it ‘well behaved’ dogs are welcome so of course in we went. It is a breathtaking interior and the dogs were very quiet walking on tiptoe peering around. It must have seemed to them an immense space. They waited so quietly as we lit our candles and then suddenly everyone started taking pictures of them. We were posing in front of the Font and the High Altar as the cameras flashed…..dear me. Kate took some pictures too which we’ll put on the website.
We had a very happy ten days in Eastbourne while I was teaching on a movement and dance course. It’s been an on and off stint for the last thirty years and walks on Beachy Head are so nostalgic remembering all the beloved Irish (two previous generations) who used to scamper over the Downs chasing rabbits. Happy days with our darling Bryony and Gilda (a cocker spaniel) and after them Miss Bunch and Becky Price…the same rock pools and early walks along the prom before classes begin. It was a wonderful week in spite of a fair amount of rain.
I looked after all the five family Irish or should I say they supervised me for a week in the New Forest while everyone was away. Isobel (Mussie) and Nonny Manners, Imogen’s Tessie and of course Zu and Beeg. They are enormously fond of one another and it feels rather like summer camp as we muddle our way through the days. The only way to cope really is to take them somewhere where the rabbitting is good and Isobel, who is almost thirteen, and I can sit down and wait. One problem is, as we all know, sitting down is frowned upon and the rest of the pack always belt back just as we’re getting comfortable. I can’t understand what this is really about but I think all the Irish seem to do it. We had to sort out ponies, other walkers, the picnics and all that but it really is magical to watch them dashing in and out of the heather and gorse which is in full bloom. They look so amazingly beautiful; their ears flattened flying for their lives. Real creatures of the forest.
Tomorrow is the Irish Terrier Association Fun Day at Roade. Hope to see some of you there. Imogen and I have been sorting out Beegie’s costume for the fancy dress. She loves the whole day, the fancy dress, the races, everything. Zuli will have nothing to do with it and won’t even get out of the car. Anyway, this year, Beegie has the doggy pram swathed in bits from the dressing up box to look like a chariot and she is the Sultan of Zanzibar with a jewelled turban. I wanted to dress up as part of her harem but think that might be pushing our luck just a bit. Wish us luck in the sausage race. I shall endeavour not to fall over again this year. We’ll tell you all about it.
Do hope the summer’s been good for you all.
If you have any pic’s for the 2009 calendar this is the last chance to send them (jane@weloveirishterriers.com).
Many greetings, my love to the dogs,

Lucy
