Dogs Playing

I love the energy of dogs playing together
The stalk, the dash, the hurly-burly tumbling
And mighty chases sweeping out of sight and back
Oh I know it’s about hunting skills
And bonding within a social hierarchy
Learning where you stand in the order of things
But that’s scant reason for the ecstasy it brings.
This rush of joy must have a deeper source.
Perhaps they tap that vast primordial force
Which reaches back, unbroken through
eons of time and space
To the cataclysmic moment when the living
pulse began
The curious birth that holds us
Still in a tide of love or strife.
And as I laugh and cheer and punch the air
I seem to touch and, hare with
them the very springs of life.
