The Healers

I’m going home at last and I want to see my dogs.
Like the walking wounded, dismayed and in pain
I climb the steps to my own front door.
Please let me in quickly
Shut out the horrors of hospital procedures

There they are – so cheerful, warm and earthy brown
That even I must smile.
Straight to bed and they hop up beside me.
Everything about them says “Well? …”
And I say, “Sit with me quietly and I’ll tell you how it was”.
Without words they understand –
And the healing begins …
